Our highly acclaimed 'The Good Oil' Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz Blend is released for another vintage. Chasing the tail of our past vintages rated in Halliday Wine Companion for 2023 and 2024 92, we bring you the 2022 vintage.
The Wine
Appearance: Deep purple
Nose: Spice and cherry
Taste: Blackcurrant, leather, Christmas cake, dark chocolate, dark cherry, subtle oak, lush generous fruit-full palate, medium soft tannin and long finish
Food Pairings
Paired with mushroom risotto, Turkish lamb kebabs, chargrilled tenderloin with chimichurri sauce
Vineyard & Winemaking
50% Shiraz 50% Cabernet Sauvignon blend
Single vineyard. Made using traditional methods such as open fermentation, basket pressing, and 26 months in American oak to build richness and length. The Good Oil is a blend of our Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, crafted each year with the guidance of Phil Christiansen. This annual tradition allows us to honour the season, with each vintage bringing its own unique expression and nuance.
The Story
Our Grandad Len was an Engineer who retired at the age of 76. Rougher than hessian underpants, but plagued by arthritis which rendered him unable to move freely, he refused the use of a cane and maneuvered himself around with the aid of the nearest wall. Reminiscent of the days of the Snake Oil peddler and his cure-alls...with one swig miraculously healing the ageing cripple in the audience, it reminds me of Len and his few beers at the end of a day in the garden under the shade of a tree....you would swear he had no affliction at all. The Good Oil is aptly named in his memory. The Good Oil...for whatever ails ya.

A burly wine cast in American wood - a hark back to a tradition. Dark-fruit allusions, a belt of licorice, soy, hoisin, liniment and mocha-vanilla. There is heft in spades. Not necessarily much finesse, but that probably not the point here. Personality, on the other hand is.

This is good for the price. The coconut, bourbon and mocha accents and the sweet tannic frame of American oak suits this hot year well. A fine nose of maritime salinity melds with dried safe, thyme, Chinese herb, tea and damson plum. Forceful and carrying some heat. But in all, well crafted.
